RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

President Barack Obama's speech on immigration will air live at 8 p.m. on NBC12.

Despite a decision by NBC to air its regular primetime programming instead of the speech, NBC12, as Richmond's news leader, felt compelled to carry the speech live on-air and online due to the significance of the president's planned executive action on immigration reform.

ABC, CBS and FOX also said they would carry their normal primetime programming instead of the speech.

The President plans to sidestep Congress and order federal action which could spare from deportation as many as 5 million people illegally in the U.S. The figure includes extending deportation protections to parents and spouses of U.S. citizens and permanent residents who have been in the country for five years.

The President will then fly to Las Vegas where he will sign the executive actions on Friday.
