Odd taste, odor in drinking water near Lake Chesdin

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA (WWBT) -

The Appomattox River Water Authority issued an alert Friday afternoon about an issue causing drinking water to have an odd taste and odor.

The issue is likely due to algae growing in Lake Chesdin and causing a musty or earthy taste and small. The water treatment staff around Lake Chesdin and the Appomattox River have now changed the treatment process to get rid of the compounds in the water causing the issue. Those changes should improve the taste and odor of the water in a few days.

The water is safe to drink and meets all requirements from our Safe Drinking Water laws.

The algae is growing due to a lack of rain and ensuing low water flows through the Chesdin Reservoir, according to Colonial Heights officials.

If you have questions related to this specific issue, please contact the Appomattox River Water Authority at (804) 590-1145.
