HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Virginia State Police said the driver of a disabled vehicle on Interstate 95 South in Henrico ran from a trooper sent to help him, and was struck and killed by an oncoming vehicle.
State police were called at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, asked to respond for a disabled vehicle just south of Exit 83 (Parham Road) on I-95. When the trooper arrived on the scene, the driver of the disabled vehicle was outside. As the trooper approached, state police said the driver began walking up the shoulder of the interstate and away from the trooper. The man then ran across the northbound travel lanes, into the median.
To ensure the driver's safety, state police said the trooper ran to help him. When the trooper approached the man in the median, state police said a struggle ensued, and the man ran away from the trooper into the southbound lanes of I-95. A southbound vehicle was unable to avoid the pedestrian, and struck him.
State police called for an emergency crew, however the man died at the scene. Both the trooper and the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian were uninjured.
