One killed in Rockingham plane crash

HARRISONBURG, VA (WWBT) - Virginia State Police are on the scene of a fatal plane crash in Rockingham County in which one person was killed.

State police were called to the scene at 6:57 a.m. Sunday. According to authorities, the plane involved was a Cessna 172S single-engine, fixed-wing aircraft small plane. The plane crashed at a remote location within the George Washington National Forest.

Two people--the pilot and a student pilot--were in the plane when it crashed, state police said. State Police, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are still in the process of determining the cause of the crash.

State police are also being assisted by resources from the Rockingham County EMS, Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Forest Service.
