ASHLAND, VA (WWBT) - Senior quarterback Zac Naccarato (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) completed 14 of 20 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns as the Randolph-Macon football team dropped a 28-25 decision to Bridgewater in ODAC action Saturday afternoon in front of 3,698 fans at Day Field on Senior Day.
Naccarato hit two long scoring passes to start and complete the scoring. He hit sophomore Steven Quinn (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) with a 61-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter to give the Yellow Jackets (4-5, 2-4 ODAC) a 7-0 advantage. The Eagles (7-2, 4-2) answered 40 seconds later with the tying touchdown to make it 7-7 at the half.
R-MC took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 69 yards in nearly seven minutes as sophomore Seth Yurgel (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) nailed a 26-yard field goal to give the Yellow Jackets a 10-7 edge.
BC again answered with a touchdown, taking its first lead at 14-10 late in the third period.
Early in the fourth quarter, sophomore Dom Kaopua (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) nearly scored from the 18, falling short at the one. He did take it into the end zone on the next play as R-MC reclaimed the lead at 17-14.
The Eagles again responded quickly, using a touchdown to go back on top 21-17 with 11:16 left.
The Yellow Jackets were forced to punt on their next possession and BC capped a six-minute drive with another touchdown to take a 28-17 lead with 2:41 remaining.
R-MC would next be the team to answer quickly. Naccarato connected with senior Mike Doe (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) on a 62-yard TD strike. Naccarato hit Quinn on the two-point conversion as the Yellow Jackets pulled to within three at 28-25 with 2:24 to go.
The Yellow Jackets were unable to recover the onside kick and the Eagles were able to run out the clock and secure the victory.
Doe finished with five catches for 121 yards.
Junior John Byrd (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) carried the ball 19 times for 83 yards, putting him over the 1,000-yard mark for the season. He has 1, 016 yards on the ground, the 11th 1,000-yard rushing season in program history and the fifth in the past eight years.
Freshman Norman Cade (Rolesville, N.C./Wake Forest) led the Yellow Jackets with 12 tackles, while sophomore Marcus Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) recorded 11 stops. Both players had 1.5 tackles for loss.
Randolph-Macon will face its traditional season-ending foe in Hampden-Sydney on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. in Farmville.
