RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Republican Dave Brat has won the race for former Majority Leader Eric Cantor's Virginia 7th District seat, and was expected to give his acceptance speech at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, just 90 minutes after polls closed.
As of 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, with 92 of 244 Virginia voting precincts reporting, Brat had received 59.06 percent of the votes, while his opponent Jack Trammell had received 38.57 percent of the votes.
With this election victory, Brat follows up on a stunning primary victory over the former House Majority Leader, Eric Cantor.
Both candidates in the 7th District race are professors at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland.
Brat campaigned in the general election as being opposed to most of President Barack Obama's policies, including the Affordable Care Act. An economics professor at Randolph Macon, Brat said he would be the best choice to help improve the economy.
