MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) - Atlee senior linebacker Ricky DeBerry was awarded his U.S. Army All-American jersey during a ceremony at the high school on Monday afternoon. DeBerry is one of 90 of the best high school seniors in the nation who will compete in the annual game in San Antonio, Texas, on January 3.
DeBerry is in his first season at Atlee, after transferring from St. Christopher's this fall. He's helped the Raiders to a 7-2 record so far, as they've clinched their second straight playoff berth. His teammates and coaches were present at Friday's presentation, along with numerous friends and family members.
The Raider linebacker is one of the most highly sought-after high school football players in the nation. He has narrowed his college offers down to a final eight, and will take two more official visits (Alabama, Michigan State), before announcing his decision on December 19.
DeBerry suffered a dislocated shoulder this past Friday in Atlee's loss to Highland Springs, but says he doesn't expect that to keep him sidelined for an extended period of time. The Raiders host Lee-Davis in their regular season finale on Friday.
