HIGHLAND SPRINGS, VA (WWBT) - Last season, Atlee and Highland Springs treated out to one of the more entertaining shootouts of the year, with the Raiders earning the 49-42 win. Friday the two teams meet again in a contest that's crucial to both squads' playoff standings.
Highland Springs enters with a perfect 8-0 record and atop the VHSL 5A South power rankings. The Springers topped Henrico, 18-6, their last time out and now look to move one step closer to their first perfect regular season since 2007. While the Highland Springs offense is experienced and appears to be clicking, especially with the return of Felton Davis, the defense has been outstanding as well, giving up just 95 points all season.
That defense will be a necessity on Friday, as Atlee comes in having scored at least 40 points in each of its last three games, including a 70 point outburst this past week against Armstrong. The Raiders scored 56 unanswered points to cruise to the win and improve to 7-1 this season. They've rattled off four straight wins since their lone loss at Henrico.
The Springers can lock up home field advantage deep into the postseason with wins in their final two games. Atlee certainly has done enough to earn a spot in the playoffs and now is hoping to earn a home first round game. A win on Friday could move the Raiders very close to that scenario.
Kickoff is set for 7:00pm on Friday at Highland Springs. We hope you'll tune into NBC12 On the Sidelines at 11:15 for a complete recap of this game, as well as many others around Central Virginia.
