Several Rams shine in VCU Black and Gold scrimmage

Rams back on the floor for 'Black and Gold' exhibition

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - VCU fans got their first look at their 2014-2015 Rams on Sunday, as the team took the floor at the Siegel Center for the annual Black and Gold scrimmage. 4,855 fans were in attendance for the exhibition game.

The Gold team topped the Black squad, 73-63. Melvin Johnson, who suited up for Black, led all scorers with 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Johnson has received high praise from Shaka Smart for his offseason work in the gym, and it showed Sunday. Treveon Graham added 14 for Black, including hitting all three of his three point attempts.

JeQuan Lewis led the victorious Gold squad with 19 points, and hit eight of his ten free throw attempts. Briante Weber added 15 points and seven assists, while Jarred Guest and freshman Michael Gilmore chipped in ten.

Smart said after the game that several returners performed well on offense, but he would have liked to have seen more on the defensive side of the ball. VCU heads to Florida for a closed-door scrimmage on Saturday. The Rams will return home for a November 7 exhibition game against California, Pennsylvania.
