Virginia Union falls in overtime to Bowie State

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Virginia Union University's Dane James, stepping into the place of injured Kenneth Graham and Shawheem Dowdy, completed 14 of 29 passes for 149 yards, but Bowie State University upset the Panthers 20-17 in overtime at Hovey Field in Richmond, Va.

James came off the VUU bench in the second quarter to take the snaps for the Panthers. Dowdy had replaced Graham in the first quarter after the VUU starter was injured.James, a junior from Sunrise, Fla., connected on a 38-yard pass to Jussie York with 2:20 left in the second quarter.

VUU's Troy Krepich became the first Virginia Union kicker to record two 50-yard field goals in the same season when he hit from 50 yards out in the first quarter. Krepich had set a school-record with a 55-yard field goal last week against Chowan University.

Virginia Union's Jerome Robinson rambled in from 15-yards out to score a VUU touchdown in the third quarter.  In the overtime period, VUU couldn't score on it's possession. Bowie State then hit a field goal to come away with the win.

The loss dropped VUU to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the CIAA. Bowie State is now 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the CIAA.Virginia Union travels to Elizabeth City, N.C., to face Elizabeth City State University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 1.
