Chesterfield family plans 1-year-old's funeral after deadly daycare fire

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Final arrangement have been set for Joseph Allen, the 1-year-old who succumbed to injuries he sustained in a fire at a Chesterfield daycare.

Visitation starts Friday at 5 p.m. at Bliley's Augusta Avenue location. The funeral is Saturday at 12 p.m. at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Chesterfield.

As the investigation into what caused the fire at the daycare continues, the community is rallying around the Allen family. Friends, family and complete strangers are raising money for Joseph's funeral.  Some people are leaving messages of comfort for the family, while others just want to remain anonymous.

Seven hours after it launched, organizers have exceeded the $10,000 goal they set for fundraising.

Investigators say Joseph Allen was left behind during a fire at his unlicensed home daycare. He died later at the hospital.

At this point, authorities are only saying the fire started in the garage and it was accidental.

Virginia Department of Social Services will not be investigating this case. According to a Social Services spokesperson, even though a child died, there was no history of complaints made about what was revealed to be an unlicensed facility. The spokesperson went on to say the department will help police if it is contacted, but will not spearhead an investigation of its own.

If criminal charges are filed in this case, those would come from the police department.

At this point, both fire and police are working together. Chesterfield Fire and EMS says it hopes to have more definitive answers about the fire by the middle of next week.
