HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A Henrico man faces a charge of reckless driving in connection with a crash which killed a 6-year-old boy.

Raul Exequiel Nicholas Vasquez was in his bed with his two-year-old brother and his mother on October 5 when a car driven by Ronnie R. De La Cruz crashed through the wall of their bedroom at the Three Chopt West apartments. Vasquez died 11 days later at VCU Medical Center, while his mother and brother have since recovered.

Police charged De La Cruz on Saturday with reckless driving on private property. It remains unclear how the accident unfolded, with speed bumps installed days before the crash.

Dozens of children held candles in memory of Exequiel at a vigil Thursday, after doctors removed the boy from life support at VCU Medical Center. Many of the children at the vigil went to school with Vasquez, and held candles with their parents as words of prayer filled the silent street.

A fund to help the Vasquez family with funeral expenses has been set up at all BB&T Bank branches. The fund is listed under the name Marbin Rufino Vasquez, in the care of Exequiel Vasquez.
