Man inside Midlothian Turnpike motel fired on Richmond police

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond police say an armed man is holed up in a motel in the 5500 block of Midlothian Turnpike.

Police received a call around 3:45 p.m. Sunday for the report of a domestic incident at the Cloverleaf Inn motel. When authorities arrived in the parking lot of the motel, they said a man inside the motel opened fire on them. Police took cover. Now, at least one SWAT team is in position, and people in nearby businesses have been ordered to stay indoors.

Police have informed people in nearby businesses that if they can see the windows of the Cloverleaf Inn, then they are in the potential line of fire. The situation unfolded nearly across the street from NBC12's studios. Police blocked off Midlothian Turnpike for three blocks in either direction from the motel, and have limited NBC12's access to the scene. Richmond Outreach Center is one of the establishments inside the potential line of fire.

There are two police barricades in place, at German School Road and Covington Road. No one other than emergency vehicles is being allowed through.
