RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A man opened fire and shot three people in Richmond's Northside Friday, as a police patrol moved through the area.
Officers responded within seconds, with the patrol a short walk from the crime scene.
Just after 2:40 p.m. neighbors reported shots in the 3200 block of Carolina Avenue in Highland Park. According to Richmond Police Spokesperson Dionne Waugh, the officers saw a crowd of people take off from the crime scene, leaving three people behind with gunshot wounds.
Medics rushed the victims to VCU Medical Center, where all three are expected to recover.
Police took one of the people from the crowd into custody, where detectives questioned him concerning the gunfire.
"[Officers] saw one person who they took into custody based on their investigative training," Waugh said in an interview Friday. "And right now we're in the very early stages of the investigation."
By early Saturday, no charges were filed. The man questioned was not considered a suspect, and a motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
