VCU begins season ranked 16th

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - For the second straight year, VCU will enter the basketball season as a nationally ranked team. The preseason USA Today Coaches Poll was released on Thursday, with the Rams ranked 16th.

VCU is the lone Atlantic 10 team in the top 25, after being picked to win the league earlier this week. Some are saying this is Shaka Smart's most-talented group since he arrived in Richmond. The Rams finished last season 26-9 and lost Rob Brandenberg and Juvonte Reddic to graduation.

Meanwhile, Virginia enters the year ranked eighth in the poll. The Cavaliers are one of five ACC teams in the initial rankings and visit the Siegel Center to face VCU.

As for the Rams, they'll tip off their season on November 14 at Navy when they face Tennessee. Fans can get their first look at VCU on October 26 during the Black and Gold game.
