CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Mills Godwin senior golfer Mark Lawrence had been in this situation twice before... tied atop the leaderboard at the state championships after 36 holes. The previous two occurrences, Lawrence emerged victorious. The trend held true in the final golf tournament of his high school career.
Lawrence buried a 15 foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to claim the VHSL 5A state title, holding off Thomas Jefferson's Nathan Chuwalt. The Eagles' senior shot 143 for the two day tournament, but was forced into the playoff situation after seeing his three shot lead disappear.
It marks Lawrence's second straight state crown and third overall, all of which have come after winning on playoff holes. Last year he edged Manchester's Lyberty Anderson, and he won on a playoff during his freshman season as well.
Lawrence isn't the only Godwin golfer celebrating. The Eagles claimed the team title, edging Deep Run, 613-615.
