HIGHLAND SPRINGS, VA (WWBT) - Henrico police have arrested a Highland Springs High School teacher, charging her in relation to what police called an inappropriate relationship involving a juvenile male.
Police arrested Tessa Monique Hairston October 10, charging her with indecent liberties of a person under 18 while in a custodial or supervisory relationship.
"She was always nice to me," freshman Brittany Roberts said. "She always said, 'Hi!' I didn't know her on a personal level but she was always respectful to the students."
The timeline of events that led up to Hairston's arrest happened quickly. HCPS spokesperson Andy Jenks says a parent notified administrators Thursday night.
"We have an obligation to respond quickly and appropriately," Jenks said.
He says police were called and an investigation was launched. When Hairston got to school on Friday she was questioned by administrators. Police charged her Friday night, she is now out on bond. Detectives are not releasing details on the alleged relationship."It's important for us to make clear there is a legal process that needs to unfold so nobody on this end or any other end is expected to make any sort of judgement until all the facts are known at a later date," Jenks said.
Henrico police said Hairston was awaiting arraignment in Henrico Juvenile & Domestic Court. She is now on unpaid administrative leave.
