RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Virginia Union University set a school-record with 697 offensive yards and scored the most points for a Panther football team since 1921 as VUU demolished Lincoln (Pa.) University on Homecoming 78-13 on Saturday, October 11, in Hovey Field in Richmond, Va.
The 697 yards broke the school record of 623 yards of total offense set against Norfolk State University on October 24, 1992.
VUU scored 11 touchdowns in the game, breaking the single-game school-record of 10 set against Lincoln (Pa.) on October 15, 1960.
VUU kicker Troy Krepich set a school-record with 10 extra points. The previous record was nine, held Gil Hernandez against Lincoln (Pa.) on October 11, 2008.
Krepich also set a record by attempting 11 extra points, breaking the school-record of 10 held by Steve Duncan against Livingstone on November 15, 1980.
VUU's Cassious McDowell rushed for 174 yards on nine carries, including four touchdowns. McDowell's four TDs were one short of the single-game record, and marked the first time a Virginia Union player rushed for four touchdowns in a single game since Andre Braxton turned the trick against Fayetteville State University on November 4, 2000.
McDowell's average of 19.5 yards per carry was the second-highest single-game total in VUU history, second only to Judge Thomas' 20.0 yard per carry set against Saint Paul's College on October 2, 1976.
The 78 points are the most by a VUU football team since Virginia Union defeated Morgan State University 85-0 on October 29, 1921, and were the the third-most points ever by VUU in a single game.
Virginia Union got on the board first with a nine-yard pass from Kenneth Graham to Donte Gross.
VUU would go to lead at halftime 44-13.
Graham would complete 14 of 25 passes for 338 yards and two touchdowns. Graham's longest pass of the day was a 50-yard touchdown strike to Eric Shaw in the second quarter.
Shawheem Dowdy came into the game in the third quarter and went 2-for-2, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jussie York.
York would catch two touchdown passes on the day while teammate Devonte Miller led the Panthers with 86 yards on three receptions.
The win raised VUU's record to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in CIAA Norther Division play. The Panthers now lead the Northern Division of the CIAA by virtue of their 5-1 overall record. Virginia State University, which is also 3-0 in the Northern Division, is 4-2 overall.
Lincoln fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the CIAA Northern Division.
Virginia Union now travels to Murfreesboro, N.C., to face Chowan University at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18.
