RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Before 2014, Armstrong hadn't started 5-0 since the Jimmy Carter administration. The Wildcats rocked Varina last week by a 46-24 count, their first ever victory against the Blue Devils, and now turn their attention to Highland Springs, where they'll try to snap another long losing streak to an opponent.
Not since 1992 has Armstrong defeated the Springers. Highland Springs also enters 5-0 and is coming off a convincing 45-3 win over Glen Allen. Loren Johnson's group is outscoring opponents 173-40 on the year, and has allowed no more than 13 points in a game so far this season. Quarterback Juwan Carter has transitioned nicely into the starting role, and has weapons all around him in KC Hinton, Marcus Taylor and Greg Dortch, just to name a few. Michigan State commit Felton Davis, who has been sidelined with a back injury, is not expected to play once again this Friday night.
As for Armstrong, the Wildcats have stormed onto the scene. Statistically, Kedrick Moody and company have scored more points than Highland Springs, posting 45 points per outing. Nigel Chavis has been a huge difference-maker for Armstrong on both sides of the ball. Last week against Varina, the Wildcats capitalized on six Blue Devil turnovers, with Chavis at the center of much of the scoring.
The Wildcats are also looking to reverse a trend of dominance that has favored the Springers in this series. In the last four meetings alone, Highland Springs has outscored Armstrong, 191-18.
Friday's Game of the Week kicks off at 7:00pm at Armstrong High School. Be sure to catch On the Sidelines at 11:15pm for an in-depth recap of the contest.
