Ayers leads Virginia State past St. Augustine

ETTRICK, VA (WWBT) - Sophomore quarterback Tarian Ayers recorded a career and game–high three rushing touchdowns to help lift the Virginia State University football team past St. Augustine's University, 42-35 in Rogers Stadium Saturday evening.
With the victory, the Trojans improve to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; while the Falcons fall to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
VSU fell behind 7-0 to open the game, before 14 unanswered points off a two-yard touchdown run from senior running back Louis Johnson and a one-yard rushing touchdown from Ayres, making it a 14-7 contest.
SAU would answer back and tie the game at 14-all with a 2-yard rushing touchdown from Cyril Davis.
Ayres recorded his final two touchdowns off runs from four yards out and nine yards out, to give VSU a 28-14 lead going into the half.
Virginia State came out of the half scoring two more touchdowns with runs from junior running back Kavon Bellamy (15 yards) and freshman running back Earl Hughes (11 yards), making it a 42-14 contest.
St. Augustine's recorded 21 unanswered points, capping the 42-35 ballgame.
The Trojans return to action hosting Elizabeth City State University next Saturday, October 11 in Rogers Stadium at 2 p.m.
