RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Danny Rocco's first head coaching job was at Liberty. He spent six years at the head of the Flames program and led the squad to a complete turnaround. He was a three-time Big South Coach of the Year, led Liberty to the Big South title in four of his six seasons, and boasted winning records in each of his campaigns in Lynchburg.
Rocco will return to Lynchburg this Saturday, as his Richmond Spiders head down to face the Flames. Richmond topped Liberty last season at Robins Stadium, 30-21. The Flames are 3-2 on the season and coming off a loss to Indiana State.
The Spiders come in with a 2-2 record and are coming off a bye week. They fell to New Hampshire, 29-26, their last time out. Quarterback Michael Strauss comes in as the FCS leader in completion percentage (70.8).
Rocco has fond memories of his time at Liberty. He says the emotion comes from the relationships he formed at the school, not the buildings or the stadium. Many staff members with the Flames are people Rocco himself hired, and he's looking forward to seeing some familiar faces this weekend.
He also has been preparing his team for a rowdy student section, which is positioned behind the visitors bench.
Richmond and Liberty kick off at 7:00pm on Saturday evening.
