Hermitage, Varina set for meeting of two storied programs

Hermitage, Varina set for Game of the Week showdown

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Hermitage and Varina are two of the most successful programs in the Richmond area since the turn of the century. Since 2001, the Blue Devils have only lost 28 games total, the Panthers 24, and they'll renew their annual series on Friday in our On the Sidelines Game of the Week.

Hermitage had won four games in a row against Varina, before the Blue Devils escaped with a win last season. Many of their meetings have featured down-to-the-wire finishes and sold-out crowds, and Friday's meeting is expected to follow suit.

Both teams pride themselves in their difficult out-of-district schedules. Varina head coach Stu Brown went as far to say if the Redskins wanted to come down and play, his team would take them on. Hermitage is 2-0 with wins over Meadowbrook and Colonial Forge, while the Blue Devils are 1-1, coming off a loss at Thomas Dale. They won their season opener at Mountain View.

This also marks the second year the two teams cannot meet in the playoffs, due to the re-classification that took place prior to the 2013-2014 school year (Varina will drop down to 5A in 2015-2016, making a postseason meeting between the two once again possible). Many players say that will make the lone meeting of the season that much more intense.

The two teams kick off Friday at 7:00pm. Click on the above video to see Matt Estreich's preview on the match-up. On the Sidelines kicks off Friday at 11:15pm.
