1975 Maryland cold case leads to cemetery in Bedford

BEDFORD, VA (WWBT) - A decade old cold case involving two Maryland sisters made its way to Southwest Virginia.

Sheila and Katherine Lyon went missing on March 25, 1975. New information led investigators to the Mountains of Bedford County.

Investigators aren't saying much. The Bedford County Sheriff's Office has been asked to help the Montgomery County (MD) police force with a cold case that dates back almost 40 years.

Investigators have been scouring Taylor's Mountain in the Thaxton community of Bedford County for days. Residents say police have been focusing their search at a cemetery on the top of a hill.

The cold case in question involves Sheila and Katherine Lyon, little girls who went missing in March of 1975.

The FBI called Lloyd Michael Welch a person of interest in that case. Welch reportedly spent time in this quiet secluded community of Taylor's Mountain growing up.

Investigators hope that will lead to a break in this case and eventually give closure to the Lyon family.
