Petersburg shooting victim dies; suspect charged with murder

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - The victim in a shooting Wednesday at a Petersburg motel has died from his wounds. Laquain Roberson, 39, died Wednesday night at VCU Medical Center.

Investigative leads from witnesses and other evidence identified Melvin Ellis III, 21, of Dinwiddie as a suspect. Petersburg Police coordinated with the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, who arrested Ellis early Thursday morning in Chesterfield.

Authorities said several other arrests are pending for others who had various roles in the incident. According to Petersburg police, the shooting was provoked by an argument.

Police charged Ellis with murder and several firearm infractions. He is being held without bond at the Petersburg City Jail.

At 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, Petersburg police responded to the Knights Inn on Wythe Street for a report of gunshots heard in the area. Authorities found the victim, Roberson, with at least one critical gunshot. Roberson went to VCU Medical Center via LifeEvac.
