MLK Jr. Middle School dismisses early after truck hits utility pole

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A truck hit a utility pole outside Richmond's Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School Thursday morning, knocking out power to the building and forcing early dismissal.

Students at the school were released at 9:15 a.m., according to a Twitter post from Richmond Public Schools.

Bellevue Elementary also lost power, as did the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, Juvenile Detention Center and VCU's School of Nursing were all without power, according to Dominion Virginia Power. All of the buildings have since had their power restored.

Bellevue students were able to stay at school and begin their school day at 10:30 a.m., however MLK Jr. students were dismissed because it will take longer for power to be restored to that building.

The dump truck hit the power pole Mosby and Leigh streets around 7 a.m., not far from the school building. Dominion officials are working to restore power, but don't have an estimate on when it will be back on at the school.
