MIDLOTHIAN, VA (WWBT) - Monacan and James River both seem to have postseason potential in 2014, and after impressive starts, will meet in a key early season match-up in our On the Sidelines Game of the Week.
The Chiefs are looking for their first 3-0 start since 2008. They opened the season by knocking off defending state champion Dinwiddie, and followed that up with a big victory over Mills Godwin last Friday night. Monacan is also looking for its first winning season since that 2008 season, but the Chiefs did make the 4A South playoffs last year.
James River, meanwhile, is coming off a 6-4 season, and hasn't tasted the playoffs since 2000. The Rapids are currently 1-1, opening up the campaign with a win over Deep Run, and pushing Douglas Freeman to the brink in a tough 17-13 loss last week.
Last year, James River won this match-up, 30-16, but the Chiefs had won the previous three. This rivalry is intensified by the fact that the two schools are separated by just seven miles, so many of the players on either side have played with or against each other growing up.
Kickoff is set for 7:30pm on Friday night at James River.
