A woman traveling from Florida to Pennsylvania faces child abuse and neglect charges accused of leaving three children locked in a hot car in Petersburg.

Emily Farber, 26, was arraigned at the Petersburg Juvenile and Domestic Relations court Friday morning. Two of those kids are just 8-months-old, while the other is only 3-years-old.

Police say soon after they arrived, Farber was seen leaving the store with another child who she had taken inside to use the bathroom.

The children are now out of the hospital and in the custody of Petersburg Social Services.

"You need to take the child out of the car and need to take them wherever you go," says Petersburg resident Phillip Alston.

"Anybody knows you can't even leave a dog in a car without getting a charge, so why would you leave a child?" agreed his mother, Ronnette Morris-Alston.

Farber is due back in court, October 16th.

Moments before rescue crews arrived at the parking lot of the Walmart at 3500 S. Crater Road, shoppers say there was panic as strangers tried to help the children escape the potentially deadly heat.

"They were just like, 'baby, wake up! You gotta unlock the door! Wake up!'" said Stacey Jones.

Inside, she said the toddler had vomit on her, and was sleeping.

"The other two little ones, they were just…they were just limp. They were just there lying there limp," said Jones.

Jones said several shoppers who noticed the children tried to help them. She says they were pushing on the car and rocking it, trying to wake the older child up from inside to open the door so they could all get cooled off.

"I mean, they were trying so hard to try to save these kids!" said Jones.

Crews arrived and the children were all removed, but witnesses say one baby was purple.

"It wasn't just like a somber sleep. It was kinda just like I give up. Like, that's the look they had on their face. Like I give up."
