Body of missing boater recovered in New Kent

The body of a drowning victim was recovered on the Pamunkey River around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday by New Kent Fire-Rescue crews.
The victim, William G. Hodges, was located on the river along the eastern shoreline, approximately 40 yards from the last known point of witness contact.
Personnel from the New Kent Sheriff's Office were on scene as well.
The remains have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond.
Hodges' boat stalled around 1 p.m. Sunday off of Cumberland Road and he tried to swim around 300 yards back to the shoreline, according to witnesses. Hodges went under and never resurfaced. Sheriffs do not believe anyone else was inside the boat.

People on shore called 911 and crews rushed to the scene. A deputy tried to swim to the boat, made it around 200 yards, but was unable to find Hodges at the time.
