TRAFFIC ALERT: Cox and Nuckols roads are back open, following water main break

Cox Road is back open following a water main break that happened on Monday.

Crews worked through Tuesday night to spread an initial layer of asphalt on about a 350-foot section of the four-lane road.

The first warning to avoid the area didn't come in until 8:30 a.m. from police, by that time many people were already stuck in the traffic.  "By 9 o'clock there was a notice put out but I think that was a little late so it would have been nicer if we had gotten some information from county," says Darla Newman who works at Innsbrook.

NBC12 asked Henrico's director of public works as to why a warning wasn't sent out about the road closure. He told NBC12's Ashley Monfort that so many people work in the area and drive through there, a back-up would have been unavoidable even with a warning.

On Monday, a water main closed parts of Cox and Nuckols roads near Innsbrook, according to Henrico Police. Interstate 295 north also backed up at Nuckols road due to congestion, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Cox Road is closed in both directions between Nuckols Road and N. Park Drive. Signs are in place with detours leading motorist to use Capital One Way.  If at all possible, use Broad Street or Springfield Road as alternate routes.
