Richmond radiologist passes away

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

It is a sad one for people all over the world as they mourn the passing of one of Richmond's own. Dr. Ellen Shaw de Paredes was considered a giant in breast cancer diagnosis and prevention. The 62-year-old lost her own battle to endometrial cancer on Saturday.

Dr. Ellen Shaw de Paredes was just as fun as she was passionate about women's health-
especially breast cancer diagnosis and prevention. If you wanted to see her eyes light up in her Glen Allen office, all you had to do was talk to her about the advances she had seen since she started as a radiologist in the early 1980s.

"The way we do biopsies which is now through imaging guidance instead of through surgery. The second was digital mammography about 14 years ago, that developed. But the most recent, which is really wonderful, is tomosynthesis or 3-D mammography," said Dr. de Paredes said in a previous interview.

She was most excited about the tomosynthesis machine at her Institute for Women's Imaging in Glen Allen - one of very few in the area. Dr. de Paredes knew this would help save more women's lives because it picked up pre-cancers before they could even really develop.

Doctors from all over the world flocked her office to study the machine for months under her guidance, just so they could take back their new knowledge to their own offices.

Dr. de Paredes traveled the world lecturing about breast imaging and diagnosis. She was a published author, and a member of numerous professional organizations.

However, during our interview, she said she never went into this for the money or recognition.
She believed this was simply her calling, and for 35 years, her calling helped to save hundreds of women's lives.

Dr. de Paredes leaves behind her husband, Victor, as well as her mother and sister. Funeral arrangements are pending.
