Summer scorcher has Richmonders trying to beating the heat

Posted: Updated:
HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

The unofficial end of summer was a scorcher across Central Virginia.

Families across the Richmond-area did what they could to beat the heat. The new "sprayground" at Henrico's Twin Hickory Park  was a hot spot to cool off, as temperatures soared. The mist from the water was rising from the hot sidewalk as children splashed in the cool water and parents watched longingly.

"It'll make you cool when it's really hot," Kayla Richardson said.

"I like the water on it!" added Savannah Edge.

Across town in Richmond, many say they were just planning to stay indoors.

"I've got two dehumidifiers and four ceiling fans," said Jose Jose who was just trying to beat the heat. "So, it'll keep me nice and cool. Standing joke in the neighborhood is if I ever start all my fans the house will come off the foundation."

"I'm jut not a heat person," added Frank Harmon. "You know, I can stay out for a little while but all in all I'm headed in my truck where the air-conditioning is."

The week is only expected to get hotter, but there are several things you can do to beat the heat. Wear lighter colored clothing, drink lots and lots of water and always remember to wear sunscreen.
