Free shoes, hairdos for thousands of Richmond students

With the first day of Richmond school on the way, thousands turned out for a chance at free shoes, hair cuts and manicures.
More than 100 children showed up in Richmond to get their hair cut and styled before they head back to class.
The whole idea behind the first annual Day of Beauty at Cedar Street Baptist Church in Church Hill is that if you look good you feel good. The effort is in connection with Kutz for Kids. Organizers say they recognized a huge need this time of year.

"A lot of times, parents go through things where you have to cut something in order to keep something. So, we didn't want to have that pressure on them for the first day of school," said Tanaquil Mosby, who helped organize the event.

It wasn't just the free hairdos and manicures that brought out the crowds. Over on the Southside at Second Baptist Church, thousands lined up braving the heat and humidity for a chance to get a brand new pair of shoes.
The ninth-annual shoe drive hosted by 13 local churches has grown each year. organizers say more than 4,000 students got a brand free, new pair of shoes this year.

"I could imagine that if you are going to school with holes in your shoes or old shoes, then in their mind they're focused on that. But now they can feel proud to go to school with new shoes on their feet," said Reverend Reuben Boyd whose church started the drive.
