New Kent family loses nearly everything in early morning fire

A New Kent family lost nearly everything when their mobile home burned down in a fire early Wednesday.

The fire started around 5 a.m. at a mobile home in the 1300 block of Dispatch Road.

Two people were inside the home when the fire started. Crews originally said one person was hurt, but that person was checked out at the scene and will be okay. The other person was not injured.

Rickala Crewe fought back tears as she looked at what was left of her father's mobile home near the intersection of Dispatch and Quaker roads in New Kent. She wasn't inside, but says her father he tried to fight the fire on his own, burning his leg in the process.

"As far as we know, they turned the heat on and my dad's oxygen line was laying on the heat and it started to shoot out of it, which turned, I guess, into fire," Crewe explained. "It shot onto the bed and blanket and he couldn't control it any more."

The good news is everyone inside was able to get out safely. The bad news is they lost everything.

"Phones purses, money, everything." Crewe said. She says the family doesn't even have clothes or shoes.

Crewe says as devastating as the loss is the family is keeping in mind the fact that they still have each other.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
