RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - ASSIST Student-Athletes is an organization that looks to raise the profiles of high school athletes who hope to continue their careers in college. Saturday saw the group's first ASSIST Top 48 Camp.
The organization invited the best players in the Richmond area to Big Ben's Court in Richmond for a day of drills, games and instruction. Not only did the afternoon feature hoops, it also featured a seminar on NCAA guidelines and other off-the-court necessities that high profile players need to know.
ASSIST founder William Carter says that it was difficult to decide who to invite, as Richmond features a lot of talented basketball players. The organization has many other events planned, including all-star games and showcases for both boys and girls players.
Attendees at today's camp included recent VCU commit Kenny Williams (L.C. Bird), De'Monte Buckingham (Henrico), Nick Sherrod (St. Christopher's) and Jeremy Sheppard (John Marshall). Many local high schools were represented, and players we spoke with said they found the experience valuable. The players today had at least one more year of high school hoops to play.
