Moment of Silence for Michael Brown in Richmond

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

More than two decades after they burst onto the hip hop scene the popular 80's group Salt-N-Pepa are using their music to inspire and encourage a new generation.

"Whatever we can do or say that can bring us all together and make a negative into a positive,' Salt said.

The killing of Ferguson teen Michael Brown by a police officer has inspired the group to send words of encouragement to those on the streets of that community.

Salt says they are exercising their constitutional rights to protest.

"My heart goes out to his mom first and foremost I can't imagine what that feels like I could cry, have a 15 year-old son."

At Saturday night's "80's was the Greatest Concert" Salt along with Pepa and Spinderella will pay tribute to Brown's life during a moment of silence.

They are hoping to encourage people to engage in peaceful protests.

"A moment of silence to me is a moment of prayer and solidarity, Salt said."

Deborah Bland is attending the concert with several of her childhood friends. They are just a few of the hundreds expected to be in attendance.

Deborah says the tribute to Brown brings awareness to an issue that has plagued the black community for some time.

"It happens all the time we are always killing each other and people seem to go on day to day so hopefully people will reflect on this and realize we have to change," Bland said.
