Varina will lean on defense in 2014

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Since the turn of the century, Varina football has lost fewer than eight games in a season only twice. The Blue Devils finished 2013 9-3, as campaign which included a playoff victory.

2014 will see Varina rely heavily on its defense, a unit that returns eight starters from last year's team. That includes three linebackers who are have received Division I offers. With only three starters back on the offensive side of the ball, head coach Stu Brown and company are looking to the defense to step up in keeping opponents off the scoreboard.

Brown says the defensive philosophy is simple: If the other team can't score, it can't win. The head coach says if the Blue Devils win 56-0, they're happy. If they win 56-6, they're disappointed. The focus is always keeping other teams out of the endzone.

Varina will kickoff its 2014 campaign next Thursday, August 28, at Mountain View. NBC12 On the Sidelines kicks off August 29 at 11:15pm. Click on the above video to hear from Coach Brown and senior linebacker Chris Tedder on the upcoming campaign.
