Community comes together to give backpacks to kids in need

It was a backpack Bazaar of sorts as 600 backpacks stuffed full with brand new school supplies filled the gym of Hopewell High School.

This event, sponsored by Police Army Churches and Schools, or PACS, is called the Backpack Giveway.

It's mission here is clear--to keep the outreach going for students in need, with just under two and a half weeks before the start of school.

"This is a way of helping a lot of families get set up and get ready, and get kids set off on the right foot," said Gary McReynolds, Pastor of the Reach Out Center.

Organizers also jazzed up the event at the high school with some basketball and face painting.

Richmond also holds a Back to School Extravaganza with a similar mission.

The event was held just a few blocks south of VCU.
