VCU's Weber suspended for 'violation of team rules'

Weber suspended after larceny charge comes to light

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - VCU senior point guard Briante Weber was suspended Friday for the team's season-opening game against Tennessee, an exhibition against California (Pa.) and a closed-door scrimmage.

The school said in a statement that Weber violated team rules.

NBC12 has learned that Weber was cited for petit larceny on July 24th.  He was supposed to appear in court Friday but had his hearing continued until September 25th.

In a statement released by the school, head coach Shaka Smart said "Briante has failed to live up to the standards we've set for our program and we are holding him accountable.  Part of his discipline includes missed competition.  We expect that Briante will act according to the standards of our program moving forward."

The school said neither Weber nor Smart were available for comment Friday.

Weber led the nation in steals last season with 121 and is 90 steals away from setting the all-time division one career record in the category.
