Politifact Virginia: Medicaid and uncompensated care

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

In this week's Politifact Virginia report, hospitals have been some of the biggest supporters of Medicaid expansion - even though it's on hold here in Virginia. Maybe it's because hospitals stand to benefit financially.

Recently, Democratic state Senator George Barker of Fairfax said uncompensated care has fallen 30 percent in states that have expanded Medicaid. That means fewer people are showing up at hospitals without the ability to pay anything.

Politifact looked at the numbers and found what Senator Barker is saying is true. Reporter Warren Fiske says many hospital chains are finding costs dropping in states where Medicaid has been expanded.

"Tenant Health, which is a national health chain has found that its hospitals in states that have expanded Medicaid have seen a 33% reduction in Medicaid costs so far. I mean it is early in the process, but the numbers are pretty consistent right now," Fiske said.
