Gov. McAuliffe gives address on state budget

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Gov. McAuliffe gave an address to Virginia lawmakers on Friday regarding the state budget, saying it's a mess.

The meeting comes as the state prepares to make potentially deeper revenue cuts than the $1.5 billion already earmarked in the current two-year budget.

The Governor's message was simple: the state's economy is in trouble and swift action needs to be taken to rectify this problem.

The governor told committee members that the state was at a $1.55 billion shortfall when money from reserve funds are applied.

Significant cuts are likely, but we do not know which agencies will experience these cuts just yet.

The governor says he will be working with committeemen and will likely have a plan in place by December 17.

Virginia ended fiscal 2014 with a $438.5 million shortfall, a 1.6 percent drop from the year before.
