Teen's shooting in Ferguson causes concerns in Richmond

The growing tensions following the Missouri shooting of unarmed teen Michael Brown are causing outrage right here in our area.

The images unfolding in Ferguson, Missouri are striking a chord locally.

"Tired, fed up, frustrated," Ratwoine Fields said.

The 23 year old saw the aftermath following Michael Brown's shooting and felt a connection.

"I see, I've noticed, I heard stories about people who have lived the police brutality, lived the lack of protocol, lived the mass incarceration, lived the murders," he said.

Now he's organizing a peaceful rally - helping bring Richmond together to reflect on lives lost after confrontations with police.

The drama in Missouri - reminds many of the violent confrontation in Petersburg earlier this year. A mother and son were convicted of assault and obstructing justice after a teen recorded cell phone video of officers from his front porch. Within the past few days, there's been a spike of views online and shares on Facebook. This as the tensions in Ferguson have led to numerous protests – many of which have turned violent.

"When people show up in riot gear with tear gas and dogs then you get a reaction on the part of the protestors…Not to say that they shouldn't be out...but in these cases there probably needs to be a much different approach," said University of Richmond professor Dr. Andrea Simpson.

Especially, she says, since Brown's death follows a series of similar scenarios.

"Oscar Grant at Fruitville Station…We have this one. We have Ezell Ford. We have Eric Garner who just a few weeks ago died during a choke hold…I think this is a tipping point," she said.

One that finds Central Virginia uniting in peaceful assembly.

"This is just a first step, a commemoration and then the next step would be the education and to see how we can start changing local and national policies," Fields said.
