$500K Bike Boulevard plan gets Fan District backing

Big changes are coming to Richmond's Fan District. The neighborhood association has drafted a letter in support of a more than $500,000 bike boulevard. It would run from Carytown to VCU's Monroe Park, but is it a nicety or necessity?

"I think it's a necessity, but I think it will be really nice when it's done," said Max Hepp-Buchanan who is director of Bike Walk RVA. "We're trying to get more people walking and biking. There's a lot of the population that says they would love to bike more if they felt safe on the roadway, and right now they don't."

The Fan District Association drafted a letter of support after polling residents. The Bike Boulevard is a $571,000 project that would replace most of the stops signs with roundabouts along a more than two mile stretch from Carytown to VCU's Monroe Park. The remaining intersections would likely have curb bump outs.

"You can get around safely if you simply lay out the lines right here on Floyd Avenue and not do a half million dollars worth of infrastructure that doesn't need to be done," said concerned citizen Charlie Diradour.

Councilman Charles Samuels says these plans would not prohibit cars on the stretch.

"In this case for the long-term future of the city I believe it's a necessity," said Councilman Samuels. "Really all this is doing is slowing down traffic. It's not removing traffic from the road. It's not forcing people on to different streets."

We found some neighbors who feel the bike boulevard plans don't go far enough.

"Very disappointed," said concerned citizen Joe Cahill. "Divert the traffic. Get rid of the traffic. Promote it for bicyclists, and pedestrians, and kids playing. Who doesn't want less traffic?"

There are also calls to reduce the speed limit in the area. This all goes before the planning commission on September 2nd.
