BLACKSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Virginia Tech hosted it's annual football media day Saturday afternoon. Unlike most years, there is uncertainty this time around at quarterback.
Mark Leal, Brendon Motley and Texas Tech transfer Michael Brewer have all thrown their hats into the ring to be Logan Thomas's successor.
"We knew the job was going to be open, and the competition is what we need," Leal said. "It just makes us better. Everyday every rep counts. You can't slack off, you can't take plays off."
"Picked it up over the summer working with the guys out there doing 7-on-7 drills," added Brewer. "That's helped me a lot, and then coach Loeffler instilling the offense day by day and bringing it along slowly but surely... but I feel pretty good about where I'm at."
Frank Beamer added, "The toughest part is that Motley hasn't been able to compete. His back's been bothering him a little bit. I think Leal and Brewer are battling right now, and now we need to get Motley back in there."
"I feel pretty good," said Motley. "It's just something minor. Nothing serious, and I'm about to get back in here soon so I can play as fast as possible."
Motley has been out with a back injury, but Beamer says he'll return to practice Monday, and then he expects to make a decision quickly.
The Hokies open up their season three weeks from today here at Lane Stadium against William and Mary.
