PUEBLO, CO (KDRO/CNN) – A Colorado toddler is in critical condition after police say a 5-year-old shot her on Monday.
Authorities say a 9-year-old had the unattended gun first, then the 5-year-old got the gun and shot the toddler, a 3-year-old.
The child was taken to the hospital for surgery.
Police say the girl’s mother and her boyfriend, Adrian Chavez, 22, were both home at the time. They say they boyfriend had a warrant for failure to appear and he ran from the home.
He was later arrested and will be charged with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury because he left the gun unattended.
The 5-year-old will not be charged.
According to KDRO, the 9-year-old, “told investigators that he learned how to manipulate the handgun by playing video games.”
