HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

If tragedy strikes, Henrico Police are ready and waiting to swing into action. For nearly five hours on Sunday, about 200 officers, firefighters, volunteers and mall employees played out a lifelike active shooter scenario.

"In this training scenario, we had several people who were shot, so we had to decide how would you get those people some rescue services? How would we keep the mall employees and the rest of the patrons and shoppers here safe," Henrico Police Capt. Linda Toney said.

Toney said this training has been in the works for months now. All of this is done with hopes of keeping you and your family safe should the worst happen.

"We always learn something new, every time we have training we can walk away with something we need to tweak with our safety plans or something that we can add to it," Toney said.

The details of these training exercises are not made public for safety reasons. And while police hope they don't have to put what they learned this weekend into action, they all agree it is better to be safe than sorry.

"Unfortunately, in this day and age, this is something we hope we never have to utilize. But again, a great opportunity for us to train today," Toney said.

On Saturday, Henrico Police conducted an active shooter training scenario at the University of Richmond.
