Convicted killer's parole request denied

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The Virginia Parole Board has decided not to free the man serving time for brutally murdering three people, shooting Richmond Police officer Cheryl Nici and ambushing a sheriff's deputy in October of the year before.  Kenneth Woodfin has made a request for parole multiple times, but yet again, this week, the state denied that request.

The parole board tells NBC12, Woodfin will not be eligible to make another request for three years.

You may remember, we heard from the convicted killer, whose violent rampage left Central Virginia on edge for days three decades ago, for the first time in April. He called NBC12 after  we brought you the story of Kenneth Woodfin's only surviving victim as she fought against his parole.

We put in a request with the Virginia Department of Corrections to see if Kenneth Woodfin would talk to us. We did not think he would say yes, as he hasn't spoken with the media.  He reached out to tell his side of the story.

When asked if Woodfin killed his wife, sister-in-law and best friend, he replied, "No, I did not."

In 1985, however, juries didn't see it that way. Kenneth Woodfin is now serving multiple life sentences for brutally murdering three people, shooting Richmond Police officer Cheryl Nici and ambushing a sheriff's deputy in October of the year before. It was a crime spree that spanned multiple jurisdictions.

In June, Woodfin will be up for parole.

"I spent almost three decades in prison for a crime I did not commit," he said. "I cannot get my life back. I came to prison when I was 36. I'm now 66."

He tells us he's done a lot of things in his life he's ashamed of, but he's never shot or killed anyone.

"You think about all those times that you got away," he recalled.  "So then when you get convicted of something that you didn't do you chalk it up right there. You say ‘what the heck is karma.'"
