McDonald's employee killed in shooting outside Henrico franchise

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Henrico police say an employee shot outside an East End McDonald's late Sunday night has died.

Detectives say Michael Raymond Bailey, Jr. was shot outside the fast-food restaurant in the 5100 block of Nine Mile Road around 10:30 p.m. is now a homicide investigation. Bailey was rushed to VCU Medical Center and taken into surgery, but was later pronounced dead.

NBC12 spoke to Bailey's family who are understandably distraught over this loss and have asked for privacy.  Bailey was only 22 years old.

"It is scary," says Harsha Panchasara.  She manages the BP gas station across the street and is now concerned for her employees who work late.  "I'm worried about their safety too because I'm not all the time here, they are all the time here," she said.

It happened around 11:15 p.m. Sunday night.  The restaurant was still open when police say Bailey was shot outside.  There are several cameras posted around the restaurant. Police say they will be looking through that surveillance video. But officers won't say where Bailey was shot.

Police have only released that they are looking for two males who took off on foot.  "At this time we're trying to determine what actually happened, we're unsure about the motive," say Lt. Linda Toney with Henrico Police.

Customers, like Dennis Moore, say they feel safe but believe employees may have a harder time.  "It's a shock, put everybody on their toes," he said.  "They're going to look around the parking lot make sure nobody is trying to do bodily harm to them."

This is the second time somebody has been shot at work in Eastern Henrico.  A security guard was shot at the Food Lion on Mechanicsville Turnpike last week.  His shooter remains on the run.  The grocery store is less than four miles from this McDonald's.

Investigators don't think the shootings are related and need your help to find the gunman.

"Somebody is bragging about this maybe somebody slipped and told somebody some information, give us a call you never know if that small piece of information about a shooting may help us," says Lt. Toney.

A McDonald's corporate spokesperson says the company is saddened by what happened and their thoughts are with the Bailey family.

So far, no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information is asked to call Henrico Police at (804) 501-5000.
