Officials: How to free a trapped child in a hot vehicle

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Stories of children being left in hot cars continue to grip the nation.

Most recently, a child was pulled from a car in Texas after the mom accidentally locked her keys inside.

Keith Ambrose with Albany Fire Department pleasant summer days like Thursday can be deceiving when it comes to the temperature inside a car.

"It's pretty pleasant, I think it's in the 80's? Well if you got inside a car in the sun you're going to be in between 90 to 95 degrees quick," said Ambrose. "Especially on these hot days when it is 100 degrees, I think these temperatures in hot cars can get up to 120, 125 degrees very quickly."

That's why every minute is crucial when a child is left behind.

So what can you if a child in your care were to accidentally get locked in a sweltering car?

First, fire officials say its ALWAYS important to immediately call 911.

"If you're up there and you bang on the glass for two or three minutes, that's two or three minutes that you could have had someone there trying to get the child out."

Next, experts say to grab anything you can- a tire iron, a hammer, or any tool, to quickly smash through a window.

They said one of the best tools to use is a window punch, because all you have to do is go to the bottom corner of a window and press.

It's not always easy though. Fire officials said aiming for the corner of the window will be a quicker, cleaner break.

"Anything hard right up in here, a lot of times you hit more of the mass of the glass and spreading it out over a larger area and the glass holds up well," explained Ambrose. "If you can aim for the corner, it puts more of a shock through the glass and the glass will actually crumble."

Once the window is broken, cover your hand with a cloth and push the glass out, before reaching in to unlock the door and pulling the child to safety.

It is important to note that currently in the state of Georgia, you can face civil charges for that kind of damage to a stranger's vehicle, even to save a child's life.
