NBC12 VIEWPOINT: Preschool for Children; It's time to Register

By: Kym Grinnage email

My message this week is very simple: Early childhood education is a child's right and parent's responsibility.

It's never too early to register your child for preschool in the Richmond area's public school systems. If your child turns four years old by September 20, they are eligible for preschool. I was surprised to hear from many school officials and teachers that one of the biggest problems in some school districts was parents not registering their children for preschool.

Preschool helps to prepare children for kindergarten and is one of the best experiences a child can receive. It sets the foundation for a lifetime of learning. Although it may vary by city and county, now is the time to register your child. Through the Virginia Preschool Initiative, parents are able to register their children online or in person so that their child is ready for school by September 8.

The statistics are clear that when a child was involved in pre-school, the opportunity for success and higher achievement was greatly increased.
