HCA Neighborhood Health Watch: Treating trauma

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

You can't make plans to be in an accident, so it's good to know that there are already resources in place in the event you find yourself in a car accident or dealing with a work related injury.

In the event that you are in that situation, the best case scenario is to be taken to a trauma center that is specially designed to treat those types of injuries. Research shows that patients who are seen in a trauma center end up with shorter and more successful recoveries.

Each injury is rated at a level and each Richmond area trauma center is equipped to handle different levels of problem. Johnston-Willis Hospital recently became a level three trauma center.

According to Dr. John W. Hyslop, in many cases, you don't even need to know which hospital is equipped to handle your problem.

"40% of patients who are experiencing trauma are taken by emergency medical services and they have triage protocol. And they will generally take you to a trauma center for most injuries and they know what level to take you to."

By treating the right type of injuries at the right facilities, the chances of survival go way up and the overall efficiency of the process goes up as well. Saving money and lives at the same time.
